Rowing Update

Technique, technique, technique

Straight arms, straight wrists, oar height, feathering, square, half slide, body rocking, monkey grip, ‘skimming’, slide, catch, finish this week was all about technique. It has been an interesting week with our focus on technique.

We chased a tinny up the inlet on Thursday, saw a flying manta ray and Carli ‘caught a crab’ (Rowing term for when your oar gets ‘embedded’ in the water).

Erin has to focus on keeping straight arms and Charmaine is so far advanced she needs to take a step back and ‘skim’ with the rest of us to help with timing and balance while we are still learning.

Well I think it is safe to say that the steepest part of the learning curve has passed and it is all coming together.

We took some ‘oarsome’ pictures this week and a select few have been included in this brief for you to all laugh at and enjoy!

In the next couple of weeks we will be focusing on ‘ironing out the creases in our technique’. It should be noted that we wouldn’t be doing so well if it weren’t for our two wonderful coaches Andrew and Bronwen, they are champs!

I will end this on a happy note, with out team song!

Row, row, row the boat merrily down the stream
You do not want to mess with the Libraries team

Row, row, row the boat skilfully down the stream
Books and crooks are not our only theme

Row, row, row the boat hastily down the stream
Puffing, panting, rowing is not as easy as it seems

Row, row, row the boat gracefully down the stream
Messy hair and sun burnt skin, watch us gleam.

Row, row, row the boat gently down the stream
When the boat tips over, listen to us scream

Row, row, row the boat victoriously down the stream
Getting to the finish line is not just a dream

GO TEAM OVERDUE!

NB: I wrote this before we actually ever rowed. Some things remain true but there is definitely so much more that can be said now!

Cox – Erin, Stern – Tanya, 3 – Charmaine, 2 – Carli and Bow – Kristy, notice the straight arms and synchronisation of the oars.
